A Goodreads member named Finn recommended this book to me after reading how much I liked Jon Fosse's The Other Name. Unfortunately, this member is no longer active so I can't thank them directly but what a gift I was given! In just 170 pages of clean, direct prose Tarjei Vesaas develops an internal process of bonding and grief I have never seen so sympathetically articulated. This is an exceptional book. I could pour over the prose in a second or third reading. I could pour over the ideas Vesaas is driving at within his characters. I could pour over the intangible throughline of metaphorical narrative represented by the ice palace or the unspoken rules of this small community.
This one goes directly into the re-read pile and I will likely recommend it to anyone who asks.
And Finn, if you come back to Goodreads and happen upon this review, …

I loved this story, written by the Norwegian poet and novelist Tarjei Vesaas. Simple, unique, strange and beautiful. Not much happening, and yet, a lot is happening, mostly at a psychological level.
