Didn't care for this the first time I read it, loved it the second.

shrugs

The bit of history at the end of the edition really makes a difference. I suspect that was physically ripped out of the copy I first read for some reason, as it seems intrinsic to the novel. Either way, a most excellent read the second time through, and I'm no looking forward to the rest of the series, as I think it's one of the few I haven't read in its entirety.

Solid characterization, mildly twisted plot, and even with the usual mystery guessing ahead it hangs together nicely.
