I want you to do yourself proud, Joey. You go and drive those Germans back where they've come from, and then come home to me.

At the outbreak of World War one, Joey, young Albert's beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. Caught up in enemy fire, fate takes Joey on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

Aww such a beautiful book. The illustrations are pure magic. Aaaannnnndddddd horses, I am sold already.

I loved the part where Albert (friend of the horse) and the German soldier flip a coin for the horse (Joey). The suspense nearly breaks our hearts because both Albert and Joey have suffered enough and we want them to be reunited and be at peace.

The German soldier never reveals the coin and says it was the head making Albert reunite with Joey. As the book ends, Albert and Joey are lazily lying in the farm wondering who that German soldier was and if it was really the head.

I think Michael Morpurgo does some of the best war fiction around. He himself says he didn't intend writing for children but wrote for himself, so this book will appeal to all ages (though the very young may find too disturbing). I was on the verge of tears all the way through, I dare you not to be moved by his writing.
