a cute little intro to a fantastic world that belies the places the series will go
The Fire Within is a 2001 children's fantasy novel written by Chris d'Lacey. It is the first novel of The Last Dragon Chronicles, a low fantasy series about dragons in the modern world. The series continues with Icefire, Fire Star, The Fire Eternal, Dark Fire, Fire World, and The Fire Ascending. The Fire Within takes place at Wayward Crescent, and it is about a 20-year-old man named David Rain, who tries to find out the mystery behind Liz and Lucy Pennykettle's relationship with dragons. He eventually becomes friends with them and learns the secrets of the dragons.

The level of writing is lower than that of Septimus Heap. I'm not sure if that is because it is geared towards a younger crowd or if Chris D'Lacey is not as good as Angie Sage.
For me, it also had marks against it because I do not like squirrels. A story about squirrels bothers me. So, I had to grit my teeth through most of the book. Despite the writing level and the squirrel content, overall, it was a cute story. I'm sure my children will like it.
