Many years ago I watched and enjoyed the television series based on Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City", but I hadn't actually read any of his writing until I picked up this book. It centers around the same characters but is set many years after "Tales of the City" ended, and picks up the story of Michael Tolliver ("Mouse"). If you're completely unfamiliar with the previous work I wouldn't recommend starting with this book, but I remembered enough to understand and enjoy seeing the loose ends from the previous stories tied up. In essence the book is just the story of a gay HIV-positive older man, and his past and present relationships, marriage to a younger man, and how they deal with various events in his life including the complicated relationship with his evangelical family, and the aging and illness of other old friends.
