Review of 'A kind of freedom : a novel' on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
Fantastic debut. Fantastic family history. My only problem was it felt too short and ended abruptly, perhaps even precipitously.

Fantastic debut. Fantastic family history. My only problem was it felt too short and ended abruptly, perhaps even precipitously.
3.5 stars. This novel follows three generations of black women and their families, and I liked the way it jumps backward and forward in time to line up similar decision points in their lives at parallel points in the narrative. The protagonists try to make the best choices they can they can as the world around them limits their options and makes surprisingly little progress in racial discrimination over the course of the story's 70-year span. It still manages to be hopeful and sweet, with characters for whom I was rooting.
