What a fun, ridiculous book. It's basically just a well written AU Pride and Prejudice fanfiction. There were a couple moments that I thought characters were a bit out of cannon, but it was never Lizzy or Darcy, so that's good. Also, I think the book tried to tackle too many causes at once. Racism, Feminism, Sexism... so many -isms, that while worth exploring might not have needed to be in this book. But, still a lot of fun if you're a Darcy and Elizabeth fan.
Torn between 2 and 3 stars for this modernised Pride and Prejudice reselling. It's very readable, like a trashy romance novel, but only partially succeeds in being true to the original. Mr. Bennett is very well done, and Charlotte and Mr Collins are ok, but Lizzie and Jane didn't quite work for me. Darcy isn't terrible but Bingley comes off as a pretty shallow flake. And the Wickham character is just Lizzie's ex, never had anything to do with Georgina Darcy, just got kicked out of university for bad and possibly racist behaviour. Enjoyable enough fluff reading but didn't really capture the characters or the spirit of the original.
This was a book club book - not something I'd normally select on my own. It's a modern reimagining of Pride and Prejudice, with the back-drop of a reality show.
I'm probably being more generous with my rating on this than I normally would be, but I read it in one-ish sitting, which generally means I loved it. As far as a retelling of a Jane Austen novel goes, it's the best I've read in a while. There were some issues I had with it, but I enjoyed it enough to ignore them. So fun!
