Most of the stories in this book were boring—romantic, verbal meanderings about this and that. Perhaps, in its own time and in the context of the original publication (as a notable work of one of the first US writers), the book was more relevant and interesting. To me, the book gave close to nothing. I skipped half of the stories.
I wanted to read the book because of two stories: "The legend of the Sleepy Hollow" and "The spectral bridegroom". The former was a disappointment, as it was mostly about everything else but the Headless Horseman. The latter was the best story in the book. The only other one that I liked was "Rip van Winkle".
