The Gnome King reviewed The Kill by Émile Zola (Oxford world's classics)

The second book in Emile Zola's epic series, only another 18 to go I think. This one is called "The Kill" and it tricked me big time, with the subject matter I was expecting things to play out a certain way, but Zola doesn't like to do the obvious.
Renee is a stunning character, reading how her character evolved was quite the ride, she goes through an incredible amount of stress and you can't help but hope she makes it out the other end ok. Her husband on the other hand is the sort of person you want to boo, right in his face. His wheeling and dealings do leave behind a bad taste.
The subject material is of a sensitive nature but is well written to not cross a line in to gross territory.

What is disappointing in the book is how it flows from the first book, sure the Rougon name is used but this could easily be a stand alone novel, I'm hoping the rest aren't like that.
Still it is a really good read, book 3 will be next.
