First in yet another terrific series by Simon Brett.
Carole is a -- let's face it -- very uptight English woman living on her own in a small seaside town. She has her routine, and that includes a walk on the beach with her dog every morning. Then she finds a dead body on the beach, and the police don't believe her because she only called them after she'd bathed the dog first. I mean, really, why would she want him to bring all that sand into the house?? Then, by the time the police get to the scene of the crime, the body has disappeared.
To make her even more miserable, a rather strange woman has moved into the house next door, a woman with no apparent last name ("Call me Jude"), and who has the nerve to come knock on Carole's door without calling ahead to make an …
