Illuminae

Intriguing story of love, betrayal and destruction communicated via a list of files. A geek in me enjoyed the graphical presentation of the book and the audio rendering.

I don[t usually enjoy dramatizations.
I enjoyed the dramatization of Illuminae.

The acting is good and computer sound effects aren't as cringe inducing as wind and horse hoof noises.

The YA factor was also not bad at all. With an emphasis on grief that is rare in YA space adventure.
I especially liked the way casualty reports were read.

While there was some clunky writing, and in general Illuminae is the kind of Schi-Fi where the technology is there to serve the plot, I enjoyed the story and rushed through it in a couple of days.

Sadly right at the end the YA factor was taken up to 11, and what should have been a great ending turned into a prelude to a trilogy.

Oh gosh, I can't remember the last book I found that annoying. I hated the format, it just felt like really bad writing and it wasn't that revolutionary, either. The story itself was quite boring and was dragged out way too long. The main characters were whiny and the love story was plain stupid.

Don't believe the hype.

This was an exceptional book, and some of the best young adult literature I've read in recent memory. The plot twists were occasionally predictable (or perhaps narratively necessary would be a more accurate way to describe them), but a few took me by complete and delighted surprise. The characters were interesting, and even the supporting characters felt well developed, as though they had entire lives just out of sight past the edges of the novel. The typographical artwork was also interesting, although some of the smaller fonts were difficult to read in low light.

Teniendo en cuenta lo poco que sabía de este libro y que lo compré un poco por impulso, me ha sorprendido muchísimo lo que me ha podido gustar. Lo que más llama la atención es cómo está contado, que es en forma de extractos de chats y correos o descripciones de videos, y como aprovecha todo para ofrecer distintos montajes de página muy efectivos además de originales.
La historia en si no es tan original, pero ofrece la suficiente novedad como para que no se atragante y va dando datos importantes a un ritmo adecuado para engancharte y querer saber más de lo que pasa.

Lo peor que tiene el libro, es que con tanto cambio de formato de página y demás malabarismos de edición, sus seiscientas paginas son en realidad menos, comparado con páginas normales.
