This reminded me of MaryJanice Davidson's Betsy Vampire books but less insipid. It's not quite the steampunk that people seem to be classifying it as, but it certainly has steampunk-y elements. It took a while for me to get into it but by the last 100 pages I was at the point where all I wanted to do was read.
