This is told in high-flown poetic prose, the sort that Banks sometimes descends into during his novels, only this time it's used throughout the length of the piece. You could tick off the characteristic Banks tropes though: the castle (representing the family); the debased aristocrats with odd sexual habits; the peculiar torture scenes.
