Most of what Sillitoe wrote was grim and he's probably best known for his cri de coeur, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, a long short story published in 1959 in a book of the same name. (The successful film version was released in 1962.) His writing is so beautiful, though, that you're better off reading anything by him than the best work of other authors. I read Saturday Night and Sunday Morning not long after reading Jane Smiley's inexplicably well regarded Good Faith and I realized that her entire novel didn't have one sentence as good as what you could find every page or so of <Saturday Night and Sunday Morning
