This book was long and at times I found myself wishing there had been a more aggressive editor at the helm, but the story - of love, loss and what it meant to be a Hungarian Jew during WWII- worked. I wouldn't recommend this to everyone (mainly because it's both long and dark), but it's a well-written, touching story that expanded my perspective on the Holocaust.

A love story, set against the backdrop of the Holocaust in Hungary. You learn more than you wanted to know about how the Holocaust played out in that particular neck of Europe. But I found it a bit of a slog, actually. I finished it, finally, and learned a lot. But I fear that I would have gotten just as much out of wikipedia.
