"According to the authors, people who are in self-deception live and work as if trapped in a box. Blind to the reality around them, they undermine performance - both their own and others'. The problem is, being in the box, they can't see that they undermine performance. Consequently, they don't change, and neither do their results. As Leadership and Self-Deception shows, this phenomenon occurs frequently in organizations.

Most people spend much of their time stuck in the box and this multiplication of boxes is the root cause of most of the problems that impede organizational performance, accountability, trust, commitment and motivation."--BOOK JACKET.

Review of 'Leadership and Self-Deception' on 'Goodreads'

5 stars

The whole idea of "business parable" books seeming cheesy to me, but I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy and quick read, and I the structure made it easy for me to absorb the ideas.

The content really resonated for me. This framework of self-betrayal and being "in the box" gives words and structure to some less-than-ideal behaviors I've noticed in myself and others. I already see myself noticing this a little bit more in my interactions and thoughts towards others, and being able to more readily step back and "out of the box" to improve both the relationships and how I feel about things.

The challenge will be coming back to these ideas over and over, forming habits around examining myself within this framework.
