"A mother and son move to a village in northern Norway, each ensconced in their own world. Their distance has fatal consequences. Love is the story of Vibeke and Jon, a mother and son who have just moved to a small place in the north of Norway. It's the day before Jon's birthday, and a travelling carnival has come to the village. Jon goes out to sell lottery tickets for his sports club, and Vibeke is going to the library. From here on we follow the two individuals on their separate journeys through a cold winter's night - while a sense of uneasiness grows. Love illustrates how language builds its own reality, and thus how mother and son can live in completely separate worlds. This distance is found not only between human beings, but also within each individual. This novel shows how such distance may have fatal consequences"--

Intriguing project from Hanne Orstavik. As an exercise in craft this is exquisite. The connection made between both main characters is wrapped up beautifully and concisely with an atmosphere of love drunk, messy thinking by switching voices from paragraph to paragraph with no indicators. Lovely to see that kind of experimentation pay off while still being palatable for the reader. Once oriented you really can track what she is doing here just fine.

She puts her characters into the lion's mouth more than a few times and I'll confess, there were moments I rolled my eyes, but I still appreciated the playfulness. As far as this is an innovative piece there is a lot to like about these new stylistic pathways into theme. It is a largely successful novel. What holds it …

There is something hypnotic about Love by Hanne Ørstavik that has really stayed with me. Set over a cold night in Norway the novel follows Vibeke and Jon, a mother and son living in a small town. It is the night before Jon’s birthday and we follow them throughout the night. They may be a family but they are on separate journeys.

What really drew me to this book is the uneasy feeling I constantly had around these two different characters. They lived together but they felt separated. There was a tension in the air the entire time and I was never sure if I should trust any characters in the novel. This tension is what made Hanne Ørstavik’s Love a compelling read. The mother/son relationship is not what you expect and feels odd but that is what is driving the novel.
