Intriguing project from Hanne Orstavik. As an exercise in craft this is exquisite. The connection made between both main characters is wrapped up beautifully and concisely with an atmosphere of love drunk, messy thinking by switching voices from paragraph to paragraph with no indicators. Lovely to see that kind of experimentation pay off while still being palatable for the reader. Once oriented you really can track what she is doing here just fine.
Leveraging that mechanism and playing with the reader's expectations is how Orstavik adds layer after layer of tension. As far as this is an innovative piece there is a lot to like about these new stylistic pathways into theme. It is a largely successful novel. What holds it back are character actions that make it difficult to suspend disbelief. You have to swallow some large mouthfuls here and there and while overall the novel's interests transcend these issues, they linger a bit after the story's climax.
