Ernst F. Schumachers Plädoyer für eine Rückkehr zum menschlichen Maß ist ein echter Klassiker der Nachhaltigkeit – mit hoher Aktualität. Denn die Frage nach dem rechten Maß in Wirtschaft und Technologie ist heute aktueller denn je.
Größe ist kein Wert an sich: Sie kann vorteilhaft sein, muss es aber nicht. In der Ökonomie führt Größe zu Machtkonzentration, verdrängt Vielfalt und ist häufig nicht nachhaltig. Diesen Drang nach immer mehr hat Schumacher in seinem Weltbestseller bereits 1972 kritisiert. Stattdessen plädiert er für eine »Miniaturisierung der Technik« sowie dafür, »ein Maximum an Glück mit einem Minimum an Konsum zu erreichen«.

Gave up halfway through, nothing bad, but just didn't keep my interest.
Many of the criticisms in the reviews are true, but if we would have listened to this guy (even if only on fossil fuels)... How many lives could have been saved? How much better lives would we have? It's depressing to see how clearly the disasters were seen coming and how belligerently our society doubled down on greed, selfishness, and destruction.
Ok. Probably much more useful in 1971 or so when it was published than today. Nothing really revelatory for 2010. I didn't actually finish reading it - just briefly skimmed the last half of the book. You get the main idea of everything he's going to say in the introduction or first chapter. No real discussion (if any?) of class. I didn't enjoy the religious undertones. Concern over ecology.
