First 2/3 of the book were good. Quality falls when narrator turns to 3rd person.

If Steve Tesich lived anything like Saul Karoo, it is a small wonder he left early. But as a tale of growing old and looking back on a lifetime of failed relationships, I liked Saul Karoo much better than the better- crafted hero of Phillip Roth's Everyman, and the comedy is great. Saul's terrible condition of never being able to be drunk chilled me to the core, and if you have ever relieved from a boring dinner out when the neighboring table fights about their relationship, well than you can appreciate such delightful emotional exhibitionism. Wish he could have written more, while not a masterpiece, Karoo had a few moments of insight and several moments of hilarity.
