Returned

The Returned by Jason Mott started out with a strong premise but ultimately it just didn't seem to go anywhere.

The author's note at the end of the book confirmed my suspicion that he had recently suffered a loss and was engaging in a little bit of wish fulfillment. Sadly the book was written during the deep grief process where little hope is found.

we get to enjoy the breakdown of society aspect of the story when the dead begin returning en masse and the living grow fearful of being overwhelmed. But the author does not give us any rhyme or reason for why these events occur. The dead speak to us but really they have nothing to say. The story becomes one of an even more profound loss and a cruel trick.

Avec une idée de départ que je trouvais géniale et un début très prometteur, ce roman sombre ensuite dans une lenteur ennuyante, sans passion, avant finalement de s'achever sur une note émouvante qui m'a sauvé d'un mauvais souvenir de cette lecture.
