A little of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a little of The Fault in our Stars, and a lot of a unique first person narrative style that’s a mix of addressing the audience, writing in script format, and sharing events in a self-depreciating way. The narrator is a high school senior who has survived so far by making himself an acquaintance to everyone but friend to no one when his mom pressures him into spending time with Rachel who has just discovered she has leukemia. Together with Earl, the only other person he can sort of call a friend, they spend time together during her treatment. There’s a lot of crass high school humor and dysfunctional family dynamics.
