Review of 'Radetzky March' on 'Storygraph'

3 stars

A story of inexorable decline of family that is linked to the inexorable decline of an empire. The empire is held together by Franz Joseph whose life is saved by the first Von Trotta. I won't give any thing away - they all die. A very good piece of writing. You can understand the fall of the empire and see WWI from a different perspective.

There is some nostalgia as contrasted it to the Prussian/German empire, this empire was more accepting of other cultures, outsiders like Roth could find achievement. It easily places the fall on a bloated stagnant bureaucracy and military. Also women are are always trouble and should be avoided. Maybe a little too simplistic.
