GIGI TRANSLATED BY ROGER SENHOUSE, THE CAT TRANSLATED BY ANTONIA WHITE

Gigi's days are filled with cigars, lobster, lace and superstitions: the education of a future courtesan. Bored and unconvinced by what she's taught, Gigi surprises all with her approach to love. In this classic turn-of-the-century novella, Colette unveils Gigi's journey into womanhood in rich and supple prose.

In 'The Cat', a story of burgeoning sexuality and blossoming love, an exquisite strong-minded Russian Blue is struggling for mastery of Alain with his seductive fiancée, Camille.

I preferred The Cat

4 stars

The first story in this book, Gigi, was an interesting premise but the writing felt quite disjointed and the ending was very sudden as though the author had lost interest and just wanted to be finished which was disappointing. However, the second story, The Cat, was a very enjoyable read. It seemed to have been the work of a different author but this may be due to the two stories having been translated into English by different people. The story was well thought out and paced to hold the reader's attention, with interesting and believable characters.
