On the whole, I think I liked this sequel better than the first book. The first, [b:Gaven|6690546|Gaven (Gaven, #1)|J.C. The Bonding flows more smoothly, as it focuses almost exclusively on the budding relationship between Gaven and Vlar. You would have to read the first book to know that Gaven is bound, unwillingly, in a Greek style erastes/eremenos relationship with Vlar. However, it's not long before Gaven becomes a much more willing companion to the strange Vlar.
It's not all sweetness, as the two have a stormy relationship, and there are things that may yet come between them, but on the whole this is a rather satisfying, if all too short, read.
