Of Human Bondage is a 1915 novel by W. Somerset Maugham. It traces the development of Philip Carey, as his life becomes consumed by a sadomasochistic obsession. The novel is generally agreed to be Maugham's masterpiece and to be strongly autobiographical in nature, although he stated, "This is a novel, not an autobiography; though much in it is autobiographical, more is pure invention." Maugham, who had originally planned to call his novel Beauty from Ashes, finally settled on a title taken from a section of Spinoza's Ethics. The Modern Library ranked Of Human Bondage No. 66 on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.

I think this book has withstood the test of time because everyone has loved someone who is so completely wrong, and yet has been powerless to stop it. With every page you turn, you feel Phillip's addiction to this woman to the point that it almost physically hurts to keep reading. But you do because you also feel a happiness in knowing that you're not the only sucker on this planet. This book is for all those love addicts out there...you know who you are.
