From the city's seamy underbelly to the gleaming towers inhabited by immortal beings, Detective Christian Walker and rookie Detective Deena Pilgrim investigate the murder of one of the world's most popular superheroes, Retro Girl. In the course of their inquiries they discover shocking truths about the victim, and Walker finds he may have to reveal his own dark secret in order to solve the crime.

Good "crime-of-the-week" stories..

3 stars

I'm liking this one a little more, mostly because I can see what they're setting up. I sort of wonder if some of this isn't like the "Citizen Kane" problem, where crime stories with superheroes weren't really a huge thing until this came onto the scene.

Anyways, this one had some interesting stories, although the magazine articles in there are sometimes a little long for my taste. I wish I had more of a feel for the two main characters, but Deena is definitely coming into her own as far as character development goes.

I picked up the next two volumes from the library today, so we'll see how those go.

It's getting better but I am still not entirely hooked

3 stars

I definitely liked this better than the first volume. But I do have my issues with the way these two stories have played out. I like the "superhero police drama" genre quite a bit, but as far as mysteries go, I don't feel like I'm clued in on the case. The mystery is a little more drama-based than it is procedural, and I'd like a little more mystery action.

Still, I like the characters and the setting is fun, so I'll charge ahead.
