The copy of this that I read was appended to [b:Lord John and the Hand of Devils|437406|Lord John and the Hand of Devils (Lord John Grey, #0.5, #1.5, #2.5)|Diana Gabaldon|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388887989l/437406.SY75.jpg|1189871] so I thought it was another short story (bearing in mind DG's short stories are often still long), but pretty quickly I realized that this "short story" was taking a while to get through. Imagine my surprise when I looked it up on here and realized it was 560+ pages. Instead of expecting to finish it fairly quickly, I settled in for a long read (and thanks to coronavirus and my diminished attention span, it took me a full month to get through this). Confusions resolved, I enjoyed this. I'm up to An Echo in the Bone on the Outlander side of the story, so obviously I knew no lasting harm would come to Jamie or John, but …

I'm up to An Echo in the Bone on the Outlander side of the story, so obviously I knew no lasting harm would come to Jamie or John, but this was still a fun read and it helped explain how their relationship grew into a friendship, since on the Outlander side we only saw Jamie/John "end it" in Voyager and then be happy to see each other in Jamaica.
