Very engaging, but more sordid than i needed right now.
Naked in Death (1995) is the first book of the In Death series by J. D. Robb, preceding Glory in Death. This book originally had a cover flat produced for it with the name "D. J. MacGregor", but was changed later.
Very engaging, but more sordid than i needed right now.
It was ok, though the sex scenes were a bit squicky (plus I'd figured out the mystery half way through).
Gratuitous sex scenes, abundant use of the "F" word, all to advance the plot of a murder mystery set in the future. Don't waste your time...
Sex and obscenities aside, the mechanism is all wrong: the drama of a procedural thriller only works if you know (or are at least familiar with) the procedure. A good mystery uses your expectations to lure you in a direction and set up that satisfying twist at the end. The future setting dilutes all of this because the reader quickly realizes that he has no expectations...therefore, the author relies on the inherent drama found in sex and the tension caused by the obscene...
This was my first JD Robb title. Now that I know what she writes, this will be my last.
It's trying to be a thriller, a romance and sci fi but not quite hitting it on any of them. The central relationship isn't particularly believable. However it was an easy read and picked up near the end so I'll probably try a few more in the series.
