Story of a U.S. submarine commander's exploits during WWII. Written with authority and knowledge by Edward L. Beach who served in the "boats" throughout the war. Cdr. Beach conveys the thrill of the hunt for Japan's merchant marine and the drama of personal conflicts as well as the excitement of combat under the sea. A very good read.

A pulpy war story

3 stars

I wanted to read about US submarines in WW2, and it did deliver. The technical details were interesting and all that. However, finishing this book and then moving on to The Cruel Sea, and having read Das Boot, threw into sharp relief the lack of finesse in this book. It is a little too "the war was actually cool and good," a little too "we did war crimes, and here's how sad that made us feel." It's selective in who has their humanity or not, and that's ugly. It's certainly not unreadable, but it's a pulpy mass-market war story of American exceptionalism.
