pithypants reviewed Mrs. Everything by Jennifer Weiner
Review of 'Mrs. Everything' on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
I've long avoided Jennifer Weiner's books because they smack of chick lit. The summary and advance review I read of this book made it sound more serious, so I decided to give it a go. Overall, I wasn't disappointed, though there IS one section of the book that felt a bit Bridget Jones-esque. She created interesting characters and let them wrestle with some big questions related to women's identities as mothers/daughters/sisters/wives/feminists. Weiner is ambitious in tackling some serious and timely topics, but her writing is strong enough that it doesn't feel overwhelmingly heavy. Based on this book, I'd be tempted to check out some of her earlier works that might also manage to sidestep full-on chick lit drama.
