In an alternate 1950s, mechanically gifted fifteen-year-old Aoife Grayson, whose family has a history of going mad at sixteen, must leave the totalitarian city of Lovecraft and venture into the world of magic to solve the mystery of her brother's disappearance and the mysteries surrounding her father and the Land of Thorn.

Review of 'The Iron Thorn' on 'Storygraph'

I read this right after "The iron king" so there were a lot of overlapping qualities. This definitely had more of a steampunk feel to it-Aoife is an orphan girl attending an engineering school in the city aptly named Lovecraft, when she receives a mysterious letter from her brother, Conrad, who had gone missing several months before. Occasionally there were individual sentences that really bothered me. Not so much what it was saying, but how it was written. I think the author has definite potential, and she's a great storyteller. Recommended for both adults and teens who like urban fantasy/steampunk/alternative histories. Oh, I just remembered one other annoyance-I can't stand reading about two teenage boys bickering over a girl. It's almost physically painful for me, so I did find myself getting irrationally angry with the two male characters.
