Sweet, funny, warm, giving any kid this book is an act of love. As a choice for the Newbery medal though, I was a little surprised. I found it cozy if not amazing.
It avoids tragedy, social issues and stark realism in a way that differs from many previous Newbery winners and nominees. However, books like this can frankly be a bit of a relief, as it manages to be authentic without an abundance of pathos.
There is something to be said for all the experiences of childhood, including those where nobody dies. Valencia, Virgio and especially the hilarious Kaori Tanaka, professional psychic are delightful, and I hope this oddball team has more adventures in future books.
