"Astonishing prose brings to life a forgotten woman and a lost world in a strange and bittersweet Southern pastoral. Inspired by the true story of his own great-aunt, he explores the life of Miss Jane Chisolm, born in rural, early-twentieth-century Mississippi with a genital birth defect that would stand in the way of the central "uses" for a woman in that time and place--namely, sex and marriage. Not a book I'd have thought I'd like, Miss Jane is about an Alabama girl born in 1915 with malformed genitals who is incontinent for life because of it. She loves but never has a relationship and lives alone until her death.
Brad Watson writes with such sensitivity and keen observation that the book is a pleasure to read. His understanding of those born physically different and how it affects their lives is second to none.
