Review of "Mayo Clinic complete book of pregnancy & baby's first year" on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
I was given the Mayo Clinic Complete Book of Pregnancy & Baby's First Year as a gift in the early 2nd trimester of my pregnancy. It is a large, hardcover book, so it has withstood a lot of abuse and falls.
As for the content, it is very informative and complete in the pregnancy half. It gives an overview of what to expect and things going on with pregnancy. It is not very specific for months only trimester. A supplemental book of some sort would be best to find out what you want to know month to month. However, the medical information is high quality. The information on what is best for your body during pregnancy and the general changes is thorough. It is not judgemental on what you should do for your birth. This is a nice change from many books that advocate one method of birthing. The Mayo Clinic book gives both positives and negatives to each method. I used this book more than any other pregnancy book I had when I neared the end of my pregnancy and was trying to determine if I was in labor or just experiencing gas or braxton hicks contractions. The descriptions are quite helpful for that.
I have to say the first year information is lacking. There is not much medical information, nor is there a real explanation of what developmental milestones should be reached when. The best part of the first year half is that it gives suggestions on what you should do with your baby to play with them and enhance their developing skills.
Overall, this is a decent book. I would have been lost without it near the end of my pregnancy. It isn't a must have, but it is better than many other books out there.
