Richly imagined and subtly written alternate history / fantasy. Perhaps an inspiration for authors such as George RR Martin and Guy Gavriel Kay. Though I enjoyed the first half or so, ultimately I don't know enough about English history to appreciate the second half, and was disappointed that several plot threads were abandoned.
