Despite having been there several times (including two awful weeks one summer spent camping in the jungle) without having seen any snakes bigger than I am, my 21st-century image of Florida is found on page 165: "The Burmese python is the brand of snake that is taking over the Everglades by eating all the other animals."
True, I have vague memories of steam rising from sidewalks, an awareness that hurricanes happen, and the sad knowledge that Disney is a thing, but really, beyond the pythons (and genuine sympathy for a couple of friends in Miami who have to live through the summers), my primary interest in Florida involves not going back.
Nonetheless, I enjoyed this tour of Florida because it's hard not to enjoy Dave Barry's take on anything. His visit to Gatorland had me laughing out loud. And if you're one of the people who really loves Florida (and …
