Graham Downs reviewed The World Beneath by Rebecca Cantrell
Review of 'The World Beneath' on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
The story was good, and the dialogue was very tight. The pacing was excellent; it kept me wanting to read more.
I've never been to New York, much less the subway system, so everything I know about that comes from television and books. Still, Cantrell's expert descriptions mad me feel like I was actually there, and knew every subway tunnel, station, and street intersection in the city! I was a bit confused at first by the description of the clock tower, until she made a reference to the movie Madagascar, and immediately I realised, "Oh, it's THAT clock tower!"
Something that I tend to complain about a lot in these reviews, is the memorability of the characters. My reading sessions tend to be very short, thanks to my busy life, and so I often find myself thinking "Who is he/she again?" or "Now where do they fit in, again?"

Rebecca Cantrell seems to understand that problem completely, because I never felt that way while reading this book. If I last read about a character a couple chapters ago, and that character is re-introduced, I get a short reminder as to how the main character met that person. What a breath of fresh air!
So the story is good, but not QUITE 5-star good. It's very close, though. I'd highly recommend it, and I'll be picking up the next one in the series, for sure!
