We are working our way through the trilogy, reading aloud to our daughter at bedtime. While I do feel this one is better than the first book with more action and less of a “I’m smarter than CS Lewis” vibe, there is still a lot of that.
While the new male leading character has agency and control over his destiny, Lyra remains a victim of her own situation. The introduction of more supernatural beings makes it seem even more like the events of the story are predestined. Between the writing style and that feeling of inescapability, it feels almost pointless to read.
