Review of 'The James Michener Value Collection' on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
I have a MA in Geography but still learned a lot about Alaska. Don't get me wrong this is not a science book, but a quite entertaining novel.
Michener manages to combine scientific facts, historical events with fictional input.
In Chapter One it feels like you are witnessing the birth of Alaska, in the next you "wander" across the Bering Straits and so on.
Most chapters are somehow linked: in one chapter you follow a mamooth family, which is eventually hunted by humans. In the next chapter you follow the family of human hunters etc.
Some - but very few of them - fictional elements are a bit shallow, espeically towards the end of "Alaska". But still a great novel!
