Review of 'Madame Bovary de Gustave Flaubert' on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
Emma, quite simply had "borderline personality disorder." No big deal. What is a big deal is that Gustave Flaubert knew about this disorder more than 100 years before it was even defined, and painted a stunningly realistic portrait of our poor sufferer of said malady. For that I give this book 4 stars. Well, that, and it's really enjoyable to read about someone so vapid and horrible, someone who gets what she deserves in the end, if only because she remains so very unrepentant. Now-a-days this kind of story is kind of ho-hum. But back in 1857 (?) when it was first published it was considered obscenity.
