I liked the beginning portion which introduced the characters and laid out the Milieu-era world much better than what followed, but I did enjoy the twist. It took me two tries to get through the book- I gave it up once but found myself curious enough about what happened to try again. I'll try the second book as well but I suspect I'll just long to read more about the futuristic world again, not the Pliocene. I will say that I thought female characters were more fleshed out, realistic, and independent than in many books of this genre, (turns out the author is a woman!) though I still had some complaints. Overall, not bad, but can't really see myself enthusiastically recommending it to others. Also, there was some queer representation, but not in an especially positive way, and one character is repeatedly described as having a "golliwog smile," which was …
