Warren Botts is a disillusioned Ph.D., taking a break from his lab to teach middle-school science. Gentle, soft-spoken, and lonely, he innocently befriends Amanda, one of his students. But one morning, Amanda is found dead in his backyard, and Warren, shocked, flees the scene.

Review of 'The substitute' on 'Goodreads'

The real highlight of this book for me was its use of an unidentified first-person narrator. It's a very clever choice, and the author does a good job of using misdirection to keep the reader guessing the narrator's identity right up until the end.
