Imperfect Birds, in a sentence, is the story of a family (from both the mother's and daughter's perspectives) dealing with the usual and less-usual teen problems, which inevitably reflect on the parents. [return][return]What makes the novel sparkle is Lamott's writing style. I'm somewhere between the age of the teen and the parent, but I could empathize with each of them (even when they were at odds with each other).[return][return]The parents grapple with what's normal teen angst, and what's a downhill slide into a breakdown of parenting, and a "normal" amount of drinking and drug use.[return][return]Again, that could make for a really grim story, except Lamott's added layers of gratefulness, love, affection, and sense of family that keep the the story from being traumatic.[return][return]I highly recommend this book, even if you're not a teen or a parent of one.[return][return][return]This is the first Anne Lamott book I've read, but I'll be going …
