So this was interesting - we got to see the early Captain Kirk, with events from his command from before the Enterprise, and in the first couple weeks after taking over. We see snippets of missions where he learned the lessons about when to break (or bend) the rules, friendship and loyalty and the like. It was a good look T a version o f Kirk that we just know the facts of, but not the details.
