3.5 stars that I will round up. I had a good time overall, but it was a bit too long for what the story had to work with.
This is a weird office satire with almost a Dwight-like narrator. He's very concerned about authority and doing work properly, but he's more insecure than Dwight ever seems to be. I found myself both annoyed by him and sympathetic to him.
My feel is that the book is mostly a commentary on authority - the way folks are given unwarranted, unquestioned authority. The way folks use, enforce, and defend their authority. Also the ways in which trust in an authority can make folks blind to reality. But in a low stakes situation.
I found myself quite moved upon learning more about Gilroy's background in the end - it sheds light on his obsession with the cold.

There's also a lot of humor here, especially if you've worked in an office setting. There's petty territorial behavior over pointless things that is always entertaining to me. The broken chair scene will stick with me.
