Slow but enjoyable (until the end)

Reviews I found for this book complained it was slow. I enjoyed the slow parts, then found the transition to the climax (the explosion) too abrupt and then the book simply ended without much resolution.
I found the prose to be enjoyable, and slowly worked through it, sipping rather than gulping.
