Molly Foust reviewed The Last Cruise by Kate Christensen

This book is a goddamn stunning masterpiece that made me gasp with the sheer beauty of it. I burst into tears when it was over, it was on the level of listening to a perfect performance of Mozart's or Brahms' Requiem Mass. I'm still in a bit of shock. It reminded me of seeing the Pieta. So much love! So rich with nuanced understanding of the human condition!
The characters are so ordinary yet complex and relatable, it was modern but timeless.
I read The Epicure's Lament a few years ago and it had the same pathos if more humor, and it was also a goddamn masterpiece. I have so much gratitude for Kate Christensen. She reminded me of why I'm a librarian.
I feel like The Last Cruise could spawn a thousand essays, so I'm going to stop writing this and listen to the last chapter again. Very rare …
