CAPTAIN DURANT'S COUNTESS is the second book in Maggie Robinson's The London List series. This book got off to a slow start for me, with a dark and somewhat unbelievable plot. Maris and her elderly impotent husband, the Earl of Kelby, devise a plot to have her impregnated by someone so as to disinherit the Earl's evil nephew. I mean, really. Yes, the ridiculous plotline is clearly an excuse for Maris and Captain Durant to have sex early and often, but isn't that kind of what you expect from a Brava?
Once we got over the awkwardness of the first (of many) sexcapade(s), the story moved along quite well, and as usual, I enjoyed Robinson's

storytelling and characters. Even though I found Maris to be uptight and judgmental at first, I was willing to cut her some slack because she was being thrown into an awkward situation, and although she agreed to go along with it, she didn't really know what she was setting herself up for. I liked that Reynold Durant was not at all the rake that he first appeared to be, and that he was a real person who accepted an unsavory deal to help his family. Truly, this story had all the markings of a tawdry, Gothic novel, and there were several points where it all could have gone wrong, but it didn't. The one part I didn't like was that I thought the ending wrapped up a little too conveniently. The resolution of the issue with the villain struck me as having a deus ex machina flair to it, and I would have preferred to see an ending that wasn't so easy!
