Ben's adventurous journey continues

Totems & Truth continues Ben Black's adventurous journey to rescue his girlfriend, Carrie, from the otherworld in which she has been imprisoned for three books now. It's really not looking good for her chances! This novel leaps straight back into the narrative, expecting readers to know what is going on so I would definitely recommend reading the whole series in order and, if you've left a while between books, refreshing your memory of the previous ones before starting Totems & Truth. I re-read my previous reviews which was enough to set me up.

There are a couple of jumps in time early on which confused me until I worked out when I was, otherwise I very much enjoyed this next stage in Ben's journey. This is very much a middle book, but with a strong sense of an ending drawing near together with the inevitable running out of time that …

This is very much a middle book, but with a strong sense of an ending drawing near together with the inevitable running out of time that this foretells. I love the magickal and natural themes which run through the story. Characters being refreshed by time spent in nature is something with which I can strongly identify. I was also amused by the stroppy ghost, Lyle, and of course scene-stealing Faust with his demonic tail!

While I didn't feel the intensity in Totems & Truth that I did in the earliest books in this series, I appreciated the gentler respite and the awareness that something untoward is definitely building behind the scenes. Fingers crossed for Ben getting all his ducks in a row before Camille unleashes hell in book number five ... !
