Engaging, action-packed space opera, but dated and not deep

Engaging and imaginative in the mode of "golden age" sci-fi, but with that you have to buy into the grandiloquent prose, all-white casting, and gender attitudes out of Mad Men (there is exactly one woman with a speaking role, a nurse of course). When I devoured old-school scifi as a kid this probably wouldn't have bothered me, but now this is worth reading more as a historically progenitor of Space Opera.
